a Foggy Amethyst Cove in February
Looking back to these photos, it looks like a completely different world here. I cannot believe how much snow there was at Cape Split just last week. We have had a very warm month out here, and looking out my window today, there is hardly any snow left at all.
Anyway, these photos are from a wonderful trip to Amethyst cove that I did during February break, and although you wouldn't think it from the photos, it was actually a very warm day. There was a thick blanket of fog, but it was a perfect temperature for hiking the cove.
Amethyst cove is a beautiful cove that you can hike down to from the parking lot at Cape Split. You must simply hike through the field to the right of the lot (opposite the water), walk through a few trees, and you find a nice wide path that will take you down to the cove. It is about a 30 minute hike to the edge, and then you have to climb down to the beach on a series of ropes. It is a little more aggressive than some other hikes (like Blomidon and Cape Split), and it is important to wear gloves so your hands don't get too sore, but it's fun going down, and well worth the effort. If you want to visit the cove, make sure you check on the tides: it is best to go out at low tide or just before, as you need to make sure you've at least started climbing back up before the tide gets too high. If you'd like to see more photos of the cove, please see my previous Amethyst Cove post.
On the way home, we stopped to take some photos at a nearby dock.
I quite liked them, so I'm including them here as well:
(These ones are kind of spooky!)
